No doubt the medium of Film has brought us into a newer and grander age of storytelling. Through film we can experience a story in a way that is unique to the written word or oral tradition. However, has modern film dumbed down out ability to tell great stories?

When the most lucrative films happen to also have the poorest storytelling devices, character development and meaningful connection to human experience, what does that say about the culture? Does the consumer begin to, in turn, limit their capacity to tell their own stories in a deeper way? Does not engaging in the storytelling process and simply being fed narrative make our bardic souls anemic? And worst of all, does this trend creep into other mediums, and if so, is it reversible?

Movies don't have to be good to be profitable. Sometimes a quality film is actually less likely to make bank at the box office. We are, however, in what some call a golden age of television. Hour-long drama series with lots of thought put into their stories are no longer a rarity. More and more cartoons and children's series are becoming epic and plot-driven. Some have abandoned the Hollywood structure altogether and produce exclusively online content.

Popular fiction seems like a dud, but we may be in the midst of a creative renaissance. We creative types have to take it upon ourselves to maintain certain standards in what we produce and what we consume.

No doubt we are in a Renaissance, but I am feeling the growing pains. I think it would be foolish to not mention social media as a storytelling format. Twitter feeds and Facebook are integral to the modern storyteller's toolbox. We share our stories through the constant unfolding of our opinions, events, relationships, work and hobbies through updated online platforms.

Concerning television, yes you are so right. Television, or more correctly phrased, streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon, Hulu or HBO have replaced the movie theater experience as platform to be told stories in a meaningful and shared experience among fan groups.
